In a landmark development for India’s aerospace sector, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) will establish the country’s first private-sector helicopter Final Assembly Line (FAL) in partnership with Airbus. The facility, to be located at Vemagal in Karnataka, will produce the Airbus H125, opening a new chapter for indigenous rotorcraft manufacturing and strengthening India’s position in the global helicopter market.
The programme is expected to deliver its first ‘Made in India’ H125 by early 2027, with future plans to cater not only to domestic requirements but also to export markets across South Asia. A military variant, the H125M, will also be offered from the Indian line, incorporating a high degree of localisation and technology integration.
Highlighting the significance of the project, Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director of Airbus India and South Asia, said, “India is uniquely suited for helicopters, and building the H125 locally will spur this sector while ensuring these machines become integral to national development. We are delighted to take our long-standing partnership with Tata to the next level.”
Sukaran Singh, CEO and Managing Director of TASL, noted that this initiative marks a milestone for India’s private sector. “Tata Advanced Systems is proud to lead helicopter production in the private sector. This strengthens our civil and defence aerospace offerings and further builds on our successful collaboration with Airbus. We now have proven capability in both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters to serve India’s needs.”
The new facility will manage the entire process – from assembly and systems integration to ground testing and final flight trials. Once operational, the Indian-made H125 will support diverse applications including medical evacuation, disaster response, tourism, policing, and utility services. Its military counterpart, the H125M, is positioned to replace legacy Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, enhancing India’s self-reliance in defence production under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission.
Airbus’ association with India dates back over six decades, beginning with licensed production of the Cheetah and Chetak helicopters by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The H125M is seen as a natural successor to these platforms, particularly for operations in high-altitude terrains.
This project follows TASL’s earlier collaboration with Airbus on the C295 military aircraft manufacturing facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, underscoring Airbus’ long-term commitment to creating a comprehensive aerospace ecosystem in India. Currently, Airbus sources nearly $1.4 billion annually from India, ranging from aerostructures to critical systems such as aircraft doors, flap-track beams, and helicopter cabins.
Globally, the H125 has established itself as the most popular single-engine helicopter, with over 40 million flight hours logged. Known for its adaptability, the aircraft can operate in extreme conditions and be quickly configured for roles such as aerial work, firefighting, medical rescue, law enforcement, and passenger transport. Notably, it remains the only helicopter to have landed on Mount Everest, showcasing its unmatched high-altitude performance.
