SKF has launched The Patent Bay, a new open-access platform that allows companies to use selected SKF patents freely to accelerate technologies that reduce environmental impact.
The initiative aims to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing in sustainability-driven innovation, echoing historic examples such as the open release of the three-point seatbelt and the World Wide Web.
“Innovation thrives when shared. The Patent Bay is our way of unlocking that potential and driving progress across industries,” said Rickard Gustafson, CEO of SKF.
The launch follows record global patent activity—3.55 million filings in 2023, according to WIPO—highlighting both the pace of innovation and the need for greater openness.
The first patent on the platform features a high-performance bearing alloy for aviation that supports up to 25% lower emissions through improved efficiency and compact design.
Open to companies and innovators worldwide, The Patent Bay invites collaboration on technologies that can advance industrial and environmental sustainability.
