IIT Kanpur Distinguished Alumnus and IndiGo Co-Founder Mr Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional ₹300 crore towards the continued development of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, taking his cumulative contribution to ₹400 crore.

The latest commitment will provide matching grants against contributions from other supporters, of up to ₹300 crore, encouraging alumni, philanthropists and well-wishers to support IIT Kanpur’s vision for medical education, interdisciplinary research, clinical innovation and MedTech.

The School’s development plans include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital and a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre on the IIT Kanpur campus. The facilities are envisioned to advance medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery while fostering collaboration among doctors, researchers, engineers and technology experts.

Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, said, “Recognising the potential of interdisciplinary research and innovation in engineering technology and medicine to transform healthcare delivery across India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, IIT Kanpur ventured into establishing a medical school. In 2022, Mr Gangwal contributed ₹100 crore, which greatly helped the Institute set the plans in motion. This additional contribution of ₹300 crore by Mr Gangwal will help us bring this vision into reality sooner. This support reinforces Mr Gangwal’s commitment and trust in the Institute. On behalf of IIT Kanpur, I extend our sincere gratitude.”

Prof. Anil K Lalwani, Dean, Gangwal School, said, “This historic gift from Mr Gangwal, an extraordinary IIT Kanpur alumnus, is a reminder of the power of individuals to catalyse a revolution. Undoubtedly, the Gangwal School’s vision to unite medicine, technology, and innovation in the service of society will have an impact far beyond IIT Kanpur.”

Mr Rakesh Gangwal, said, “It is an honour and a privilege to be part of this innovative and first-of-its-kind medical institution.”
