OHM Global Mobility (OHM), the strategic arm of Ashok Leyland and part of the Hinduja Group, has expanded its electric bus operations in Chennai with the launch of 130 new air-conditioned electric buses under Phase 2 of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation’s (MTC) electric bus programme.

The buses were flagged off by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat, in the presence of Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, Transport Secretary Nirmal Raj, I.A.S., MTC Managing Director D. Mohan, I.A.S., and OHM Global Mobility officials.

The deployment builds on OHM’s Phase 1 operations in Chennai, where its electric buses have covered more than 3 crore green kilometres. Its Phase 1 depots have also recorded over 99% schedule adherence, highlighting the operational reliability of electric public transport at scale.

Under Phase 2, OHM will supply and operate 500 e-buses manufactured by Switch, Ashok Leyland’s electric vehicle subsidiary. The 130 buses launched today form the first batch of this deployment and will expand Chennai’s electric public transport network.

Brijesh Gubbi Suresh, CEO, OHM Global Mobility, said: “The launch of the first 130 buses under Phase 2 marks an important milestone in Chennai’s transition towards sustainable public transportation. Our experience in Phase 1, including crossing 3 crore green kilometres and achieving 99%+ schedule adherence across our depots, demonstrates that sustainability and operational excellence can go hand in hand. We are proud to build on this foundation with MTC and contribute to a cleaner, quieter and more comfortable public transport experience for the people of Chennai.”

OHM will continue to support the programme through its capabilities in electric mobility, fleet operations, maintenance and Mobility-as-a-Service solutions.
