Bengaluru: Biocon Foundation, in collaboration with Bengaluru Science and Technology Cluster and National Centre for Biological Sciences, has onboarded the first cohort of its BioWISE (Women in STEM Empowered) programme at Biocon Park, Bengaluru.

The inaugural cohort includes 15 postgraduate women selected from over 350 applicants across Karnataka for a six-month internship combining scholarships, mentorship and hands-on research exposure. The broader programme will support 25 women students—15 postgraduates and 10 undergraduates—from Tier 2 and Tier 3 institutions, offering training in biotechnology, microbiology, bioinformatics and allied life sciences disciplines.

Participants have been placed with leading institutions such as Indian Institute of Science, Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology, NCBS and Biocon, enabling them to work on live research and development projects alongside scientists and industry professionals.

Speaking at the event, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said, “India does not have a pipeline problem in science; it has a transition problem. BioWISE is a strategic intervention to ensure women not only stay in science but go on to lead and innovate.”

Dr Parvinder Maini added, “Inclusive talent development is critical for the future of innovation. Programmes like BioWISE help bridge the gap between education and workforce readiness while empowering women from diverse backgrounds.”

R. Anantharaman highlighted the collaborative effort, noting that the initiative provides structured mentorship and real-world exposure to strengthen women’s participation in STEM. Meanwhile, Dr Anupama Shetty emphasised that BioWISE is a long-term intervention supporting women at critical career transition points.

Launched in June 2025, BioWISE aims to improve access, participation and retention of women in STEM by offering stipends, technical training and career guidance. By integrating academia, industry and mentorship, the programme seeks to build a sustainable and inclusive scientific workforce in India.
