ICICI Bank has introduced biometric authentication for UPI transactions on its mobile banking platform, iMobile, enhancing both convenience and security for users. The new feature allows customers to authorise UPI payments of up to ₹5,000 using fingerprint or facial recognition, eliminating the need to enter a UPI PIN for smaller transactions.
With this update, users can complete peer-to-peer transfers, scan QR codes for in-store purchases, and make online payments through biometric verification. For transactions exceeding ₹5,000, the existing UPI PIN authentication will continue to apply, ensuring an added layer of security for higher-value payments.
The introduction of biometric authentication aims to streamline the payment experience while reducing risks such as PIN exposure in public settings. By leveraging device-level biometric capabilities, the Bank ensures that authentication remains secure and user-friendly.
A spokesperson from ICICI Bank said, “Customer safety and convenience remain central to our digital innovation efforts. The rollout of biometric authentication for UPI transactions reflects our commitment to offering secure, intuitive solutions aligned with evolving regulatory standards. This feature not only simplifies payments but also strengthens security by using trusted device-based authentication methods. Customers can continue to choose between biometric and PIN-based authentication based on their preference.”
The feature is available on Android (version 30 and above) and iOS (version 28.2 and above). Android users can authenticate transactions using fingerprints, while iOS users can utilise facial recognition.
Customers can enable this feature within the app by accessing UPI settings, selecting their account, opting for biometric payments, and completing verification using their UPI PIN and device biometrics.
