Medicaps University’s Vice-Chancellor shares insights on NEP alignment, research culture, and digital transformation.

Tier-II cities like Indore are emerging as serious education and innovation hubs. What factors are driving this shift, and how can universities in these regions compete with legacy metro institutions?

The educational system and research facilities in Indore have developed into academic centers because of improved infrastructure and digital connectivity and government policies and growing needs for high-quality education within the region. The region offers universities key advantages by enabling access to skilled talent and enabling close engagement with industries and communities and providing cost effective operations. The regional universities now provide global standards educational programs which include international exposure and internship opportunities that match local socio-economic requirements and industry needs and international academic standards. The institution achieves future-ready education through continuous program development and stronger industrial and research partnerships and student-centered educational methods.

How important is regional context local industry, demographics, and economic needs—when shaping academic programs in Tier-II universities?

Regional context holds vital significance. Universities need to adapt their operations according to the social and economic conditions of their respective areas. Education becomes more relevant and effective through the establishment of academic programs which match local industry requirements and upcoming business fields and regional development needs. The institutions need to create a worldwide perspective which enables students to acquire both local knowledge and international skills. This equilibrium enables students to develop employability skills while learning to adapt to new situations and become socially responsible.

Research-led learning is gaining momentum, but often remains limited to elite institutions. How can private universities embed research culture at the undergraduate level?

Research culture should start from the first academic year. Private universities can integrate research-led learning by encouraging inquiry based assignments, interdisciplinary projects, faculty mentored research, and exposure to real world problem solving. When students learn research as a thinking method instead of an unconnected task, they will use it throughout their educational process. The maintenance of this cultural practice depends on institutional backing, faculty involvement, and resource accessibility.

For instance, the Incubation Center at Medicaps University (MII Foundation) creates a supportive environment which enables research to grow through its advanced facilities and its various services which include industry mentorship and workshops and prototyping and hackathons and networking events to develop practical solutions from research ideas. This kind of entrepreneurial environment complements research culture by encouraging students and faculty to apply inquiry and creativity to real-world challenges.

Digital tools from AI to virtual labs are redefining education delivery. How do you balance technological adoption with academic depth?

Technology needs to support educational methods instead of becoming their replacement. Academic standards must be maintained while digital tools provide assistance for students to develop their conceptual understanding and practice their interactive skills. The combination of AI and simulations with virtual labs shows its greatest value when educational institutions implement these features through their course development work and their teachers actively participate. Educational institutions need to increase their learning results through methods that advance knowledge instead of focusing on quick content delivery methods.

In your view, what digital competencies will define graduate employability over the next decade?

Beyond technical proficiency, graduates will need digital literacy combined with critical thinking, data interpretation, adaptability, and ethical awareness. The digital work environment requires employees to master three essential skills, which include solving problems, collaborating with others through different platforms, and acquiring new technologies. Employers increasingly value mindset and agility alongside domain expertise.

As a Vice-Chancellor, how do you balance administrative responsibilities with academic vision and long-term institution building?

The academic administrators operate their offices as academic gateways which enable students to reach educational excellence. The organization achieves equilibrium through its three components which include strategic direction, empowered work teams and collective institutional objectives. The establishment of academic governance frameworks enables institutions to achieve their academic objectives while maintaining operational efficiency and effective daily management.

Finally, what advice would you offer to young educators and academic leaders navigating a rapidly changing higher-education landscape?

Young educators should develop their professional skills through continuous learning while maintaining active connections with both their educational field and their community. Academic leadership today demands leaders who can adapt to changing circumstances while working effectively with others to implement student-centered educational programs. Educators need to prepare themselves for upcoming technological advancements while keeping track of current industry trends because these developments determine their professional relevance. The educators must create an environment which develops students’ natural curiosity and personal ethics and their drive to achieve their educational goals because these qualities serve as the basis for their lifelong learning journey and professional success throughout their careers.
